🔹 What Is the Prostate? The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland in men, located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It produces fluid that nourishes and transports sperm (a major part of semen). 🔹 Common Prostate Conditions 1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. Common in older men and can cause urinary symptoms like: Frequent urination Weak stream Incomplete bladder emptying 2. Prostatitis Inflammation or infection of the prostate. Can be acute or chronic. Symptoms: pain during urination, pelvic pain, sometimes flu-like symptoms. 3. Prostate Cancer One of the most common cancers in men. Often grows slowly, but aggressive types exist. 🔹 Prostate Surgeries & Treatments 🌟 1. For BPH (Enlarged Prostate) ▪️ TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) Most common surgery for BPH. Removes part of the prostate through the urethra (no external cuts). ▪️ HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) Uses laser to remove obstructive prostate tissue. Less bleeding and faster recovery than TURP. ▪️ GreenLight Laser Therapy Minimally invasive laser surgery to vaporize prostate tissue. ▪️ UroLift Small implants lift and hold the enlarged prostate out of the way. Minimally invasive, preserves sexual function. 🌟 2. For Prostate Cancer ▪️ Radical Prostatectomy Entire prostate gland and some surrounding tissue are removed. Done via: Open surgery Laparoscopic (keyhole) Robotic-assisted (da Vinci system) ▪️ Radiation Therapy External beam radiation or brachytherapy (internal seeds). ▪️ Hormone Therapy (Androgen Deprivation Therapy) Lowers testosterone to slow cancer growth. ▪️ Active Surveillance For low-risk cancer, regular monitoring without immediate treatment. 🔹 Recovery & Side Effects Possible Side Effects of Prostate Surgery: Urinary incontinence Erectile dysfunction Infection Infertility (after radical prostatectomy) Most side effects can improve over time, and treatments are available to manage them.
