Description

🔹 What Is PSA? PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen — it's a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland. A small amount is normally found in the blood. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood. It's commonly used to screen for prostate problems, including cancer. 🔺 What Does a Raised PSA Mean? A high or rising PSA level can indicate: 1. Prostate Cancer (most concerning possibility) PSA levels can rise years before symptoms show. Not all raised PSA means cancer, but it can be an early sign. 2. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Enlarged prostate that's not cancerous. Can raise PSA due to increased prostate tissue. 3. Prostatitis Inflammation or infection of the prostate. Can cause a temporary PSA spike. 4. Recent Activities Ejaculation, cycling, or a digital rectal exam (DRE) before the test can slightly raise PSA. Certain medications may also affect results. 🔹 PSA Levels (General Guide) PSA Level (ng/mL) Possible Meaning 0 to 4 Typically normal (depends on age) 4 to 10 Borderline – further tests often needed 10+ Higher risk – may indicate cancer Note: PSA levels are age-dependent and individualized, so doctors consider your full history before diagnosing anything. 🔍 What Happens If PSA Is Raised? Repeat PSA Test – to confirm if it's consistently high. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) – to check for prostate abnormalities. MRI or Ultrasound – to visualize the prostate. Prostate Biopsy – only if cancer is strongly suspected.
